mic volume too low - markwinger - 09-02-2023

I've seen this question before but have not found an answer that works. (maybe its just my poor searching)

I have everything working except the volume of the microphone is very low.  It seems to work ok with voice command but when taking on the phone the other person has trouble hearing.
I am using a usb audio dongle:
UGREEN USB to Audio Jack Sound Card Adapter with Dual TRS 3-Pole 3.5mm Headphone and Microphone USB to Aux 3.5mm External Audio Converter for Windows Mac Linux PC Laptops
[/url] Enkarl Lavalier Lapel Microphone Kit
Pi 4 4gig.
I dont have access to the car right now so I cant post the configuration files right now.

If I open alsa mixer I see the meter movie when I talk but not very high signal.  If I move the fader down I can lower the volume.  The fader will go to 156%, but does not get louder if I go above 100% and I have not been able to figure out how to override this.

I have seen something about adding adding a software preamp plugin but I have not seen any clear instructions on how to configure it. (.asoundrc file is mysterious to me)

So I am struggling.  Has anyone who has had this problem figured out how to solve the problem?

Thanks.

You can try to use pactl/pacmd command and set volume of your microphone. Using mentioned command it can be set to more than 100%.

RE: mic volume too low - markwinger - 09-03-2023

Is pactl/pacmd installed in the default openauto installed or do I need to install it?

RE: mic volume too low - markwinger - 09-03-2023

The answer to my question is yes. Pactl is installed in the openauto distro. I have not had time to figure out how to do it. I should have time to try it tomorrow

Ok, I tried to change the volume with pactl. I set the source-output-volume to 300%. It appears to work. I open also mixer and it shows it is set to 300%, but the volume does not change. if I move the slider in asla mixer and I set volume to 0% I can see the meters show no signal. As I move the slider while making a constant sound the the meter level increase until I reach 100%. But as I continue moving the slider, the volume does not increase. I I then use the pactl to set volume to 300%, alsamixer changes is to 300% but the meter does not show any increase in volume. If you move the slider now the max changes to 153%, but volume is still the same as if it was set to 100%.

It seems to me that there is still a limit of 100%, even though there are ways that seem to allow greater than 100%. I don't know who is limiting the gain, alsa or pulse.

I know it could be resolved with a preamp on the mic, but I'm tired of fixing software problems by throwing more hardware at it.

Here are questions that need answering(the answer to any of them could be a solution):
1-is there a config item for pa or alsa that can be changed to increase the limit above 100%
2-is setting the source-out-volume the right thing to change? If not, what is?
3-how do I configure a softvol plugin to increase the volume
4-is there a boost plugin to do this?

is it even possible to fix it in alsa/pa? (I find it hard to believe this the case)
